How to Get the Most From This Builder

Before a meeting or class

Pull up your attendee list and add each unfamiliar name. Spend 30 seconds per card picking the right stress and a sound-alike hint. Print the set or keep it open on your phone. This small step prevents the moment where you freeze mid-introduction.

Writing phonetic spelling

Use words the reader already knows. Instead of symbols, write "sh" as in "ship" or "aw" as in "law." Capitalize the stressed syllable so the eye catches it first. Keep it short. A three-word hint beats a full sentence.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not ask "Is this how you say it?" in front of a group. It puts the person on the spot. Practice alone using your card, then say the name with confidence. If you are still unsure, ask privately before or after.

Using the library over time

Your saved names stay in your browser. Before the next meeting, add any new faces and re-print. Export your JSON file as a backup or to move to another device. The import button loads it back.

What this builder assumes

It uses everyday English sound patterns, not the International Phonetic Alphabet. It cannot play audio. It stores data only on your device, not on a server. Names with unusual spellings may need manual tweaking.

When to update a card

If someone corrects you, fix the card right away. A pronunciation guide is only useful when it matches what the person actually hears. Treat your library as a living document, not a one-time task.

Questions People Ask

Can I use this on my phone right before walking into a room?

Yes. Open your library, tap any card, and the full pronunciation guide fills the screen. The layout is designed for small displays. No login or account needed.

My name has a sound that does not exist in English. What do I do?

Pick the closest English approximation and add a note. For example, the Scottish "ch" in loch can be written as "kh (like ch in loch)." The personal note field is great for this.

Does this work without internet? Once the page has loaded, everything runs locally. You can add, view, and print cards without a connection. Just open the page while online first.

Why not just record the person saying their name?

That works well in some settings. But you often prepare before you meet the person. A written card lets you practice silently and check your pronunciation without needing a recording app.

Can I share a single card with a colleague?

Yes. Click "Share link" on any card preview. It copies a URL with the card data encoded in it. Your colleague opens the link and sees the same card. No data gets sent to a server.
